About Rachel

Hi! I am excited that you are here to share in this learning journey.

I am originally from Prince Rupert, BC, and am of mixed ancestry, including East Asian descent on my mothers’ side, and Tsimshian, a member of the Lax Kw’alaams band, on my fathers’ side. I have been trained as a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator, though the majority of my learning has come from working alongside community. I currently have the privilege of living and working on unceded ancestral homelands of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation, colonially known as Tofino.

Vision

I created this blog in 2013 to help grow and share my passion for nutrition that is equally as good for our bodies as it is for our planet. Previously my focus was on foods that promote biodiversity, sustainable seafood, and ethical eating.

More recently, my work alongside Indigenous communities has encouraged me to use my (online) voice to advocate for Indigenous food sovereignty. Advocating for food sovereignty will not only promote health and wellness in Indigenous communities, including decreasing the rates of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes but will also help us all repair our relationships with the land, plants, and animals which provide us with the food we need.

Honouring that Indigenous Peoples across the world lived in harmony with the land for thousands of years, this space is not intended to come from the perspective of an ‘expert’, but instead a respectful sharing of my learnings.
