Masala Chai Recipe [Dairy-Free]

I’m sharing my good friend Beena’s Masala Chai Recipe. What I love about this recipe is that it can be adapted for the seasons, or to what you have in your spice cabinet. Traditional Masala Chai is made with full-fat milk, sugar and spices. Here is a version that is free of refined sugar, and made with a dairy-free alternative.

Masala chai translates to ‘spice’ ‘tea’. This recipe, or un-recipe, is more of a guide on how to make your own spiced tea at home. My good friend Beena makes delicious masala chai, and when I asked her for the recipe, what she shared was more of a guide. I love these types of ‘recipes’ as they allow for the freedom to use what you have at home, and the option to add ingredients that follow the seasons.

My favourite milk-alternative, and definitely one of the easiest to make at home! This homemade hemp milk recipe is as simple as adding hemp hearts to water, blending, and then done! I have compiled a few of my top hemp milk nutrition facts, and tips and tricks to make the perfect glass of homemade hemp milk at home.

If you haven’t already heard, the new Canadian Food Guide draft is out and it’s down one food group – dairy. With more and more people becoming environmentally conscious, dairy has taken a back seat. There is a growing number of milk alternatives available – rice, almond, buckwheat, quinoa, pea, soy – though each pre-packaged milk alternative comes with its pros and cons. We have seen hemp hearts back on the Canadian market since 1998 and if you haven’t considered hemp milk yet now is the time! It’s hard to not get caught up in all the pumpkin spiced hype. Coffee shops have been on the band-wagon even before the leaves started to turn. I used to love enjoying a Pumpkin Spiced Latte at a coffee shop, but I now know that they are so loaded with sugar and so not worth the post-latte crash. I’ve compiled the latest research on chaga mushrooms and included my favourite way to consume them – in a delicious chaga turmeric golden milk latte.

Here in Canada, we have wild Chaga mushrooms growing on our own birch trees, offering us Mother Natures’ wild medicine. Chaga tea offers a slight vanilla flavour which tastes great on its own, and also makes a great base for a chaga turmeric golden milk latte. The combination of the immunoprotective chaga benefits and the anti-inflammatory aspects of turmeric make this an essential cold-weather drink to help nourish and nurture the body.

The movement towards locally sourced, sustainable, organic, and cutting-edge nutrition meals and drinks is a huge source of my inspiration for the meals I create and share at home. One of my favourite organic cafes, Ingredients Health Food & Apple Cafe in Victoria, unfortunately, closed its doors. This recipe for this breakfast smoothie with berries, banana and cacao was inspired by a smoothie I regularly enjoyed there. It took me a while to figure out their secret ingredient which was probably as much as a surprise to me as it will be to you, but trust me it is delicious.
